butterworth hall and helen martin studio - the arts centre - university of warwick

Nick was project partner and lead architect on the refurbishment of Butterworth Hall concert hall at the Warwick Arts Centre and its extension including the Helen Martin Studio.  The studio expressed as a sandstone cube is sized for a full symphony orchestra rehearsal, but also doubles as a small performance space.  Additional group changing rooms for the orchestra and en suite dressing rooms complete the new accommodation, which is arranged as a simple collection of elements defined by their elevational treatment.  The back of house was completely reconfigured as was the fire escape routes and capacity, enabling a significant increase in the standing and seated capacity of the main hall.  A reversal of the ventilation strategy delivering displacement ventilation as well as a moveable stage were also significant improvements in the redevelopment project.
