sports & exercise science, music technology, computer gaming studies - anglia ruskin university

The university had purchased Compass House a 1980s crucifix plan 4 storey office building.  The building included a reception on the ground floor but otherwise was under-croft parking and two standard open office floor plates with a top floor in a mansard roof.  This top level had been internally developed for university administration purposes already.

a:nw was brought in as part of the Paragon Interiors team to develop new accommodation filling in the under-croft as well as extending the ground floor area.  This revised ground floor would include a new entrance a cafe area as well as the sports and exercise science areas.  This accommodation included a mini sports hall space, exercise science labs including a plunge pool and CAT 2 bloods laboratory space.

The first floor Music technology space included recording suites, and quiet lecture rooms, all that needed high levels of acoustic separation.  Working with Cass Allen Acoustic engineers a jacked floor slab solution was developed as well as double studded construction to ensure the necessary insulation between spaces.

The remainder of the first and second floor included teaching spaces as well as IT intensive spaces for the computer gaming studies department.

All three of these departments lead to a very heavily serviced building, which required careful articulation and coordination of the services proposals, that all had to satisfy the planning requirements for the development of the site.

This relatively modest Higher Education project required many technical solutions and the development of a number of different specialist spaces in a building that was previously very standard.
